GRUEN PRECISION, ALARM

There’s something incredible about a mechanical wristwatch alarm. Some are quiet, some extremely loud and vibey (looking at you Vulcain crickets), but this one falls about in the middle. It’s in really good condition and the alarm works extremely well, once you’ve got the hang of how to set it.

It’s a very striking watch, if you’ll excuse the pun, and has the aesthetic joy of flipping form green (alarm set) to alarm off - red.

The Gruen Watch Company was once one of the largest watch manufacturers in the United States. It was based in Cincinnati, Ohio and was founded in 1894 by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Grün, who changed the name slightly by calling it Gruen. They cased their watches but used Swiss movements and parts. The reference for mine is 940SS-208A, which refers also to the Swiss movement 940 which is actually a re-named Venus 230 manual alarm calibre which was fitted to many watches in the 1950s and early 1960s. They are most distinctive, however, because of the elegant green/red aperture on the dialside.

This beauty has had a service and a new glass and is working very well.  This is my second Gruen watch and I do like their style. I’ll post up the other example soon. This watch is for sale on CHRONO24.CO.UK
