TISSOT, PR 516 GL. (SOLD)

sold out

Tissot make exceptionally good value watches - always have done. And in the 1970s the watch maker, who has been around since 1853, put out some fab models: the PR 516 models being one of them. This example is in good cosmetic condition and it’s been serviced recently so is ticking away nicely. I haven’t seen another mainstream watch where the hands go under the hour batons which are on a raised inner bezel giving it a kind of funky 3D effect. The blue dial, thick hands, orange second hand and a thick case just shout out mid-1970s. The day/date complication also really suits this watch with the windowed white background contrasting sharply withe the blue dial.

The PR, I recently found out, stands for ‘Particularly Robust…or Resilient’, in that the shock system around the movement really did make the watch quite the workhorse. The GL also stood for Grande Luxe….so apparently ‘top of the range’. This has the Tissot automatic calibre 2571 which has a quickset date feature whereby you change the date by pushing the crown in.

There’s a lovely stainless steel heft to this beauty. The crown is signed as is the integrated and original stainless steel Tissot bracelet. The date is changed by pushing in the crown. The watch is sold as ‘watch only’ - no box or papers. There are a few small scratches on the case and on the caseback, but the acrylic glass is now in great condition after a little polishing. There’s a presentation inscription on the back of the watch dating its gifting to 1974, but the serial number dates it slightly earlier to 1972/3.
