Omega, Constellation

£1,100.00

Omega Constellation Day/Date. The case diameter measures just slightly under 35mm and the case is a distinctive C-Shape (designed by the great watch designer, Gerald Genta) and the serial number (28764220) dates it to 1969.

The Omega Constellation range was launched in 1952 and has been a mainstay of their output ever since. It was Omega’s first automatic chronometer watch and possibly to define that there is one design aspect that apparently has never changed and that is the Geneva observatory image or logo on the back of the watch case. The eight stars represent the chronometer awards Omega earned between 1933 and 1952. Most also have a single applied star on the dial. Talking of dials, this one has a lovely silver textured dial - silvered linen, perhaps, that seems to shimmer in the light especially against the fluted bezel.

This has the original bracelet, which has a slight stretch in-between the 5-links, which makes for a very comfortable watch. There is also the day/date feature, which is actually a very useful complication. The automatic movement on this model is also chronometer certified and it keeps great time. It’s just a lovely watch to wear and looks really smart with a suit or just as a weekend wear. This iteration of Omega's Constellation series fits perfectly in the pantheon of vintage Constellations before they went in a different direction in the 1990s with its Roman numerals on the bezel.

The watch is in good condition and running and keeping time well, but has had the acrylic glass replaced at some time in the past. The lume on the hands has faded too and has partially come away at the end of the minute hand.
The service history is unknown. It’s got a quick set method of changing the date: you have to push and pull the crown in to change it. The case back is screw back with the constellation monogram (logo); the inside back cover stamped with maker's mark Omega Watch Co and numbered 168.029. The serial number dates the watch to 1969.
