Zenith, Sporto

Another Zenith ? Well, you can never have enough of this wonderful brand in my opinion. Zenith was founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in the Swiss Jura Mountains, and quickly gained a reputation for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Zenith is probably most well known for it's iconic El Primero chronograph movement, launched in 1969. This groundbreaking movement was one of the world's first automatic chronographs, distinguished by its high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, which allows for unparalleled accuracy and precision. But running along side this had been Zenith’s elegant and highly accurate manual and automatic movements such as this 2542 movement. It’sa manual calibre that was in production only from 1968-69 and is running sweetly and accurately having had a recent full service. There is something rather magical about Zenith watches. Their history and horological awards are legendary in the Swiss watch industry and it’s always a pleasure wearing one of their watches be it a Sporto, Defy or Pilot model.

This example has a very pleasing tonneau case shape, blocky hour indices, the Zenith star sitting above the Zenith name, and a silvery grey dial in great shape for a 50-year plus watch. The crown is signed and the date changes perfectly. The watch doesn’t have a hacking seconds or a quick set date but is a manual watch in a pure sense of the word.
