Omega Chronostop

£695.00

Welcome to the ‘under-the-wrist start-and-stop watch’: the Omega Chronostop. It was designed for drivers to time laps and there are some models with the dial rotated 90 degrees clock-wise so that it could be worn on the inside of the wrist. This was never a highly successful watch for Omega, but it has charm and charisma galore. I love the 60’s design and it’s so resonant of that ground-breaking era.

I love the slate grey dial, the tonneau case, the neat, chapter ring style edging and the white hour and minute hands and the bold red second hand. It’s also incredibly comfortable and the 35mm case is just spot on for me. Some of the lume dots have worn away - at 7, 9 and 11. The case has some scratches; again nothing too bad and I don’t know the service history but it’s a great timekeeper.

Unlike most other chronographs it’s only really meant for recording sub-minute times. You press the top pusher, time your event, push down again and on release it ‘flybacks’ to zero. That’s it. But it never fails to impress and it’s far from being a gimmick.

It was originally released in 1966 as part of the Seamaster collection, but ended up two years later in the Geneve basket. This is reference 145.009 and Omega used the caliber 865 (as in this example) without a date and the Cal.920 with date. It is manual wind, has 17 jewels and the serial number dates the watch to 1967.
